Vitamin D for overall health

Vitamin D is a hormone that helps to control calcium levels in the blood.1 It’s not only needed for strong muscles and bones, but for overall health too.1

As we age, the risk for Vitamin D deficiency significantly increases.2 This can result in a decline in bone density, poor muscle strength and function, and an increased risk of osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones), osteomalacia (softening of the bones), falls and bone fractures.3

In recent years, following the discovery of Vitamin D receptors throughout the body, its role in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases has become an important focus of research.2 Vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to several other health problems, including cognitive decline, depression, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.2

Sources of vitamin D

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because most of it is made in your skin when it is exposed to the sun.1 It’s important to have sun exposure to help with adequate levels of Vitamin D, however, sun protection is advised when the sun’s UV levels are high to protect against sunburn and skin cancer.1

Vitamin D can also be found in certain foods, such as fatty fish, eggs, and some milks that have added Vitamin D.1 However, dietary sources only account for 5-10% of our Vitamin D requirements, so it is difficult to obtain enough from diet alone.

Being physically active and outdoors is the best way to help your body produce more Vitamin D. If this is not possible, speak with your healthcare professional to see if supplementation is an option.
